Bodø/Glimt players celebrate their qualification for the Champions League Group Phase following a 6-1 aggregate victory over Austrian side Sturm Graz.

Bodø/Glimt made history last season by becoming the first Norwegian football club to reach the semi-finals of a European club competition. Their captivating run through the competition saw them take the prized scalps of Olympiacos and Lazio before they were beaten over two legs by eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur.

Their qualification last month for the Champions League proper saw the club make history yet again, becoming the northernmost side to play in the group phase of the competition.

In a world full of Uniteds, Citys and Rovers, there is only one Bodø/Glimt

The club are easily recognised by their unique name, but where does it originate from? Bodø is simply the name of the town where the club is based north of the arctic circle. Glimt roughly translate to ‘flash’ in Norwegian and was part of the founders original name for the club ‘Fotballklubben Glimt’ back in 1916 – perhaps a nod to the style of football they were hoping to play. Ironically, the club did have to change its name in 1948, due to an older club from Trøndelag being called ‘Glimt’, and has since gone by the name ‘Fotballklubben Bodø/Glimt’.

You didn’t mention why they have a slash rather than a hyphen in their name…
