1. Pele at Hillsbrough

Pele at Hillsborough, 1972

A hugely iconic photo from 1972, when Santos beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 at Hillsborough with their coveted talisman Pele on a farewell tour.

The game  was played on a midweek afternoon (23 Feb 1972- a Wednesday), due to a three day week being imposed by then PM  Edward Heath, mainly to save electricity.

Interestingly, Santos regularly toured to reap the maximum rewards out of their star man, who’s popularity was universal.

It’s also refreshing to see Hillsborough as a stadium looking like a footballing arena, something often forgotten in recent years after it’s synonymy with stadium disasters.
