Last weekend’s Champions League Final was special for so many reasons, and the manner in which Barcelona claimed this year’s crown is a testament to the strength of the European club game.
But it is easy to forget that 2015 will likely mark the end for two of the most talented playmakers Europe will ever likely see. For Qatar–bound Xavi it was the perfect send-off, roared on his way by those who have basked in a golden era built around the diminutive Spaniard.
For the talismanic Andrea Pirlo it was tears of anguish rather than joy at the final whistle, not the dream end to his time in Italy but one where he has captivated audiences the world over. Another who will surely dominate wherever his next adventure takes him.
Is the era of the midfield playmaker finally at an end?
